Magnesium Sulphate(58% W/W)Uses

 

Magnesium sulphate is used to treat constipation, magnesium deficiency, irregular heartbeat (Torsades de Pointes), high blood pressure during pregnancy, to reduce the risk of fits (pre-eclampsia), pain and swelling from sprains, bruises, or boils. It is also used to treat convulsions in children who have sudden and severe inflammation of the kidneys (acute nephritis).

 

How it works

 

Magnesium sulphate is a mineral salt. It is a micronutrient. It has anti-inflammatory and laxative properties. Magnesium sulphate replaces magnesium in patients with magnesium deficiency and at site of edema in case of injuries. It decreases nerve impulses to heart muscles. In the intestine magnesium sulphate helps to retain water inside the colon, increasing the mobility and helps in evacuation of bowel.

 

Common side effects

Flushing, Nausea, Sweating, Vomiting, Low blood pressure, Common: oral dose: pain in abdomen, Low body temperature, Diarrhea, Excess of magnesium in body and excess alkali in body ., Paralysis, Diarrhea. injection: pain at the site of injection, Cardiac and central nervous system depression

Urea(1% W/W)Uses

 

Urea is used topically to treat hyperkeratotic conditions such as dry, rough skin, ichthyosis (rough, thick, and scaly skin), skin cracks and fissures, dermatitis (inflammation of skin), eczema, psoriasis, keratosis (rough, scaly patch on skin) and calluses (hard and thickened area on skin, especially hands or feet).

 

How it works

 

Urea, a diamide of carbonic acid, works by dissolving the intercellular matrix (substance found between cells) which results in softening of dry and rough skin.

Severe redness or irritation of treated skin, Mild itching; or mild burning or stinging.

Sulphacetamide(2.5% W/W)Uses

Infections of the anterior segment of the eye.

How it works

Sulfacetamide is a competitive inhibitor of bacterial para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), an essential component for bacterial growth (according to the Woods-Fildes theory). The inhibited reaction is necessary in these organisms for the synthesis of folic acid.

Expert advice

 

This drug can be taken orally for constipation. But for rest of the indication it is usually given by a doctor or a nurse as an injection directly into the vein or muscle.Do not give oral magnesium sulphate to children under 12 years.Antibiotics should be taken either 2 hours prior or 4 hours after taking magnesium sulphate.Do not take magnesium and consult your doctor:

• If you suffer from bleeding disorder, heart block, kidney problems, or breathing problems.
• If you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
• If you are taking medicines acting on nervous system, for heart problems, for high blood pressure.
• If you are going to be given an anesthetic.
